The case rests on shaky math

Rolf Penner, For The Calgary Herald    Published: Tuesday, July 03, 2007

Despite all evidence to the contrary, a slim majority of Canadian Wheat Board directors continue to claim the government legislated monopoly puts more money into farmers’ pockets than they would otherwise receive in a competitive marketplace. Real world, back-to-the-farm-gate price comparisons have repeatedly shown this is, in fact, not so. (more)

The market will correct the food crisis-Financial Post

Rolf Penner- If elected one of the messages that I will bring with me is that, as I point out in this article for the Financial Post, markets work.

Even  as we spill a lot of ink about what governments should do to solve the “food crisis,” markets are sending the appropriate price signals around the world — that it is time to restock the shelves. Proving yet again that the market works, farmers have already responded to those signals by seeding record amounts of the crops most in need. (More)

Private markets will perform better for western farmers

ROLF PENNER,  November 12, 2006, Winnipeg Free Press

DOES the Canadian Wheat Board really put more cash into farmers’ pockets? Before they jump to that conclusion, people should look at independent studies on the subject or, better yet, at prices offered in the northern states. That’s why I strongly believe in the value of a voluntary Board. Continue reading

Barley, free at last

Rolf Penner- Boy was I really wrong about the timeline here. I thought for sure the Conservatives would have given us the marketing freedom that the plebiscite showed farmers wanted and which they had campaigned on. But no they are on the real slow boat to China, which is why this CWB election is so important, its time to end this nonsense once and for all.

End of CWB monopoly will produce immediate benefits
Rolf Penner  April 4,  Winnipeg Free Press

EXCEPT for a few sticks-in-the-mud, no one doubts any longer that Prairie farmers want choices in how they market their barley. By restoring dignity and property rights to growers, the new policy will bring clear benefits, not least a declaration that, when it comes to barley, we are open for business. (more)

Paying for the Wheat Board-National Post

Andrea Mandel-Campbell and Rolf Penner,  Published: Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Ever since a federal court judge ruled on July 31 that the federal government’s bid to bypass Parliament and remove the Canadian Wheat Board’s monopoly on barley sales was illegal, pundits have been quibbling over the legal merits of the eleventh hour judgment. But whether it constitutes just “one thumbs up” for the democratic process or “two” misses the point.  (More)
